Spectator Report 2024-25: German professional football sets ticket record

Spectator attendance in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 remains at record levels. The number of tickets sold by the 36 professional clubs in Germany’s top two tiers reached a record high of 20,983,964 million in the 2024-25 season. With an average of 34,288 tickets sold per game, licensed football also set the highest average attendance figure of all time. As has been the case since these figures were first collected and is also common practice in other leagues, the statistics are based on the number of tickets sold, including honorary and free tickets.

The Bundesliga sold 11,653,239 tickets, with an average attendance of 38,082 spectators per game. The figures are slightly below last year’s figures (11,925,726/38,973) because the teams promoted at that time, Holstein Kiel and FC St. Pauli, do not have the same stadium capacity as the previously relegated teams, 1. FC Köln and Darmstadt 98, who went down at the end oft he 2023-24 season. Nevertheless, average attendance at Bundesliga stadiums was slightly above the previous year’s level of 95.18 percent at 95.91 percent. Fifteen of the 18 clubs achieved attendance of more than 90 percent.

In a European comparison, the Bundesliga once again outperformed Italy’s Serie A (30,840 spectators) and Spain’s La Liga (29,987 spectators) in the current 2024-25 season.

Borussia Dortmund led the Bundesliga with an average of over 81,000 spectators, followed by FC Bayern München (over 75,000 spectators) and VfB Stuttgart (around 56,000 spectators) in the 2024-25 season.

FC Schalke 04 recorded the highest average attendance with more than 61,000 spectators, ahead of Hamburger SV with around 56,000 spectators, followed by Hertha BSC with almost 51,500 spectators.

The average price of a ticket for a Bundesliga match was €28.78 (compared tot he 2023-24 price of €28.30), and €24.70 in the Bundesliga 2 (2023-24: €22.93). Fans paid an average of €35.28 for a seat at a Bundesliga match (2023-24: €34.22), in the Bundesliga 2 €27.55 (2023-24: €25.76) and for a standing ticket €12.04 (2023-24: €11.55) or €12.55 (2023-24: €12.04).

The price development for Bundesliga tickets thus remains well below the general inflation rate in Germany. While the consumer price index from the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt) for June 2025 shows an inflation rate of 21.8 percent compared to the 2020 annual average, Bundesliga tickets have only become 9.6 percent more expensive compared to the 2019-20 season*. The average price for a ticket at that time was €26.25. In the Bundesliga 2, the price was only €19.13 at that time, meaning that a ticket cost an average of 29.1 percent more in the 2024-25 season.

*Due to spectator restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the second half of the 2019/20 season is not included in the comparison.
